Master Timber Floors

Hybrid Flooring Brisbane

Waterproof, timber-look hybrid floors supplied and installed by Ben's team, from our showroom at 26 Elliott St, Woolloongabba.

Hybrid flooring is a rigid, click-together plank with a waterproof stone-plastic (SPC) core, a printed timber-look layer and a clear wear layer on top, usually with underlay already attached. In Brisbane it suits slab homes, apartments, kitchens, rentals and homes with pets, because it shrugs off spills and copes with our humidity better than most timber. Master Timber Floors supplies and installs hybrid across Brisbane, with a focus on the inner south and east, and you can see samples at our Woolloongabba showroom Monday to Friday, 10am–3pm.

What is hybrid flooring?

Hybrid gets its name from combining the best parts of laminate and vinyl. A typical plank has four layers:

  • Wear layer: a clear, scratch-resistant top coat that takes the day-to-day traffic.
  • Decor layer: a high-resolution print of real timber, often with embossed grain you can feel underfoot.
  • Rigid core: usually SPC (stone-plastic composite). This is what makes hybrid waterproof and dimensionally stable.
  • Backing/underlay: many ranges come with an acoustic underlay pre-attached.

The planks click together and "float" over the subfloor, which keeps installation quick and tidy.

Hybrid ranges we supply

Hybrid ranges include Decoline Woodstone SPC Hybrid, and brands we stock include Decoline, Hurford, Riverhill Floors, Preference, Britton Timber, Hana Timber, Marshall Notaras, Big Panda, Auswood, Embelton, Clever Choice, Boral, Pentarch and Wonderful Floor. Ask which hybrid ranges are on display now. Plank thickness and wear-layer ratings vary by range, so the easiest way to compare is to stand on them in the showroom. Bring a photo of your room and we'll pull samples to take home.

If you love the look of real timber, compare hybrid against our engineered timber flooring range of over a hundred boards, including popular Australian species like Blackbutt and Spotted Gum.

Hybrid vs engineered timber vs laminate

All three can look like timber, but they behave very differently. Here is how we explain it in the showroom:

HybridEngineered timberLaminate
Top surfacePrinted decor + wear layerReal timber veneerPrinted decor + melamine wear layer
CoreRigid SPC (stone-plastic)Plywood or hardwood layersHigh-density fibreboard (HDF)
Water resistanceWaterproof core; great for kitchens and laundriesWater-resistant finish; wipe spills promptlyWater-resistant surface only; core can swell if soaked
Feel underfootFirm, slightly coolerWarm, natural, solidFirm, can sound hollow without good underlay
Can it be sanded? No (replace damaged planks)Yes, depending on wear layerNo

The short version: choose hybrid for practicality and water resistance, engineered for real timber warmth, and laminate where budget leads and the room stays dry. More in laminate vs hybrid.

Is hybrid flooring right for your home?

Kitchens and laundries

Yes. A dropped glass of water or a leaking dishwasher won't swell the core, which makes hybrid one of the best hard floors for kitchens.

Bathrooms

Hybrid can go into some bathrooms and ensuites, but wet areas have their own waterproofing rules. We'll check the manufacturer's requirements and talk you through it before quoting.

Pets and kids

The wear layer resists everyday scratches from claws and toys far better than a soft timber finish, though felt pads under furniture still help.

Apartments

Hybrid is popular in Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane and Woolloongabba units because it floats over the slab and many ranges include an acoustic underlay. Your body corporate may still set a minimum acoustic rating, so we confirm the by-laws first. See timber flooring installation for how we handle body corporate approval.

How we install hybrid flooring

A hybrid floor is only as good as the surface beneath it: bouncing planks, clicking joints and gaps almost always trace back to subfloor preparation.

  • Free measure and subfloor check. We visit, measure each room, check the slab or timber subfloor for flatness and moisture, and look at doorways, kitchens and transitions.
  • Clear quote. You get a written quote that separates flooring, preparation (levelling, removal) and installation. Reviewers often mention our competitive quotes and quick turnaround.
  • Preparation. Old carpet or flooring removed, high spots ground and low spots levelled, moisture barrier laid where the slab needs it.
  • Installation. Planks laid with correct expansion gaps, trims and scotia or skirting finished neatly, and doors checked for clearance.
  • Handover. We walk the floor with you and leave care instructions.

Over Queenslander floorboards we usually recommend a sheet underlay first so the floor stays flat. Hybrid is one of the quicker floors to install; we'll confirm the timeframe for your home in your quote.

What affects the cost of hybrid flooring?

We don't publish set prices, because two hybrid jobs of the same size can differ a lot. We measure on site and give you a free, itemised written quote. What moves the number:

  • Floor area and layout. Total square metres matter, but so does the shape: hallways, angled walls and lots of small rooms mean more cuts and more time.
  • The range you choose. Plank size, thickness, wear-layer rating and whether underlay is attached all vary between ranges.
  • Subfloor preparation. A flat slab needs very little work. Uneven concrete, old timber boards or drummy tiles may need grinding, levelling compound or a sheet underlay.
  • What's coming up first. Removing carpet, gripper and staples, or old floating floors, is quoted as its own line.
  • Trims, transitions and stairs. Doorway trims, joins to tiles, scotia or new skirting, and stair nosings all add detail work.
  • Access. Apartments with lift bookings, limited parking or set working hours take more planning than a ground-level house.

Product warranties vary by manufacturer and range and are provided with the product, and our installation is backed by a 5-year workmanship warranty.

Free on-site measure and quote: we come to you, check the subfloor, measure every room and send a clear quote, with no obligation.

Hybrid flooring FAQs

Is hybrid flooring really waterproof?
The rigid SPC core is waterproof, so spills and mopping won't make planks swell. Water can still get underneath through gaps at the edges if it pools, so flooded rooms and continuous wet areas need extra care and the right details at installation.
Can hybrid flooring be installed over tiles?
Often, yes. If the tiles are firmly bonded and flat, hybrid can float over them without removal. We check for drummy (hollow) tiles and grout-line depth at the measure, and flag any door or appliance clearance issues.
Can you sand or refinish hybrid flooring?
No. The timber look is a printed layer, not real wood, so it can't be sanded. A damaged plank is replaced instead. If you'd like a floor that can be refinished over time, look at engineered or solid timber.
Is hybrid good for Brisbane's humidity?
Yes. Because the core isn't made of wood, hybrid barely moves with the seasonal humidity swings that cause gaps or cupping in timber. Very large rooms and long runs can still need expansion breaks, which we'll plan for.
How much does hybrid flooring cost?
We don't publish set prices because every job differs. The main cost drivers are floor area and layout, the hybrid range you choose, how much subfloor levelling is needed, removal of old flooring, trims and stairs, and site access. We measure on site and give you a free, itemised written quote.
Can I install hybrid flooring in my apartment?
Usually, as long as it meets your building's by-laws. Many Brisbane bodies corporate require approval and a minimum acoustic rating for hard floors. We can supply product and underlay specifications for your committee.
How long does hybrid installation take?
Hybrid is one of the quickest floors to install, though timing depends on the area, the amount of levelling and any removal of old flooring. We'll confirm the timeframe in your quote, and you can usually walk on each room as soon as it's finished.
Can I see hybrid flooring before I decide?
Yes. Visit our showroom at 26 Elliott St, Woolloongabba, Monday to Friday 10am–3pm (closed weekends), or call 0405 411 456 and we'll have samples ready.
