Caring for timber floors in Queensland humidity
How Brisbane’s wet summers and drier spells affect solid, engineered and hybrid floors, and the habits that keep a coating intact.

Queensland humidity moves timber. Humid summers push moisture into boards and drier weather pulls it out. Solid floors show that most. Engineered floors move less. Hybrid floors barely move, because the core is not wood. You cannot climate-control a floor into being a different product. You can keep indoor conditions steadier, keep water off the surface, and deal with a wet subfloor before it cups the boards.
What the climate does to each floor
- Solid timber expands and shrinks across the board. Expect more seasonal movement than with the other two, especially in wide boards. Gaps in drier weather and slight cupping in humid weather can be the climate. Ongoing cupping often means moisture from below, not just the air in the room.
- Engineered timber has a real timber face on a cross-layered core. The core holds the board in shape, which is why it is used on slabs and in apartments. The face is still timber: spills left to sit will mark the coating.
- Hybrid has a rigid core that is not wood, so seasonal humidity does not open gaps the way it can in solid timber. The printed surface still needs ordinary cleaning. Pooled water can get under the floor at the edges even when the core will not swell.
The product choice itself is set out in engineered vs solid vs hybrid. A published solid floor that lives with a wall of windows is the Holland Park blackbutt. Sun plus humidity is a reason matt coatings are often chosen. It is not a reason to skip expansion gaps.
What has to be right at installation
Care after handover cannot fix a floor that was laid tight, or over a damp slab, or above a closed, wet subfloor. Expansion gaps at the perimeter give solid and engineered boards somewhere to go. Moisture testing decides whether a slab is ready. A Queenslander with poor underfloor ventilation can keep feeding moisture into a solid floor from below, which is a different problem from a humid living room. Those checks are part of floor installation, not a cleaning tip.
Some solid products need time in the house before they are fixed, so they are closer to the humidity they will live in. Many engineered and hybrid products do not. Follow the instructions for the actual product. Acclimatising packs in a hot locked garage does not match the rooms.
Day-to-day care
- Wipe spills promptly. Standing water is what marks a coating and what finds an edge gap.
- Do not steam-mop timber. Use a timber-safe cleaner, not a harsh one, and not a soaking mop.
- Sweep or vacuum grit. Sand from the door scratches every finish, matt or gloss.
- Mats at entries catch grit and wet shoes. Shake them outside.
- Felt pads under furniture, and lift heavy pieces. Dragging a chair is a scratch, whatever the humidity is doing.
- Keep indoor conditions as steady as the house allows. Large swings, from a sealed air-conditioned week to every door open in a storm, are harder on solid timber than a steady mild humidity.
The short aftercare list for a newly sanded or newly installed floor is timber floor aftercare. Outdoor decks are a different exposure: protecting a timber deck.
When the floor needs more than cleaning
A coating that has worn through, or a floor full of scratches, is a sanding question if the boards are thick enough. A recoat, done before the timber itself is exposed, removes less wood. Over-sanding shortens the life of the board, and an engineered wear layer can be sanded through if nobody checks it. Hybrid cannot be sanded at all. If the floor is cupped from moisture, sanding it while it is still wet locks in the shape. Find the moisture first. The decision between coating again and replacing the floor is in sanding versus replacing.
