Master Timber Floors

Timber Flooring Installation Brisbane

From the first measure to the final walk-through, Ben's team supplies and installs engineered and solid timber, hybrid, laminate, vinyl, bamboo and parquetry floors across Brisbane.

Flooring nailer and new boards mid-install over the subfloor

Professional timber flooring installation in Brisbane follows five steps: consultation, measure and subfloor check, written quote, installation, and handover. The method (floating, direct-stick or secret-nailed) depends on your floor type and whether you're on a concrete slab or timber joists. Moisture testing and levelling come first, and apartments usually need body corporate approval and acoustic underlay. Master Timber Floors is QBCC licensed (15100816) and installs across Brisbane's inner south and east from our Woolloongabba showroom.

Our installation process, step by step

Customers often mention that Ben's team runs the whole job, so you deal with one crew and one point of contact from the first phone call to the final clean-up.

1. Consultation

Start with a call on 0405 411 456 or a visit to our showroom at 26 Elliott St, Woolloongabba QLD 4102 (Mon–Fri, 10am–3pm). We'll talk about each room, your budget and the look you want, and send you home with samples.

2. Measure and subfloor check

We measure on site and check the subfloor: slab flatness, moisture readings, joist condition and existing floor coverings. Doorways, stair nosings and tile transitions are noted now, so there are no surprises.

3. Written quote

You receive an itemised quote, usually with a fast turnaround, that separates the flooring, preparation (removal, levelling, moisture barrier) and labour. Reviewers regularly mention our competitive quotes; we'd rather be clear up front than add extras later.

4. Installation

Timber is delivered and acclimatised where the product requires it. We prepare the subfloor, then lay, fix and trim the floor. Skirting, scotia and door trims are finished neatly. Your quote confirms the timeframe and a start date, which depends on product stock and the schedule.

5. Handover

We walk the finished floor with you, explain care and any curing times, and leave product and warranty paperwork. Our timber floor aftercare guide covers day-to-day care.

Subfloors and moisture: the part you don't see

Most flooring failures start underneath, and Brisbane's humidity and mix of slab and raised homes make preparation critical.

Concrete slabs

New slabs hold a lot of water and must be dry enough before timber goes down. We test moisture and, where needed, lay a moisture barrier or use an adhesive system with built-in moisture protection. Slabs are ground or levelled so floating floors don't bounce and glued floors bond fully.

Timber joists and Queenslanders

Solid boards can be secret-nailed straight to joists. For floating floors or hybrid over old boards, we usually add a sheet underlay so the surface is flat and stable. Underfloor ventilation matters too: a damp, enclosed subfloor can cause cupping later.

Over existing tiles

Engineered, hybrid and laminate can often go over well-bonded, flat tiles. We check for drummy tiles and allow for the added height at doors, appliances and thresholds.

Floating vs direct-stick vs secret-nailed

MethodHow it worksProsConsider
FloatingBoards click or glue together over underlay, not fixed to the subfloorFast, cost-effective, easier over tilesCan sound hollower; needs a very flat subfloor
Direct-stickBoards glued to slab or ply with flexible adhesiveSolid feel, quieter, stableSlower; subfloor must be dry and flat
Secret-nailedBoards nailed through the tongue into joists or battensTraditional, ideal for solid timber on joistsNot for bare concrete without battens/ply

Apartments and body corporate rules

Many apartments in Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane, Woolloongabba and Highgate Hill have by-laws covering hard floors. Before we start, we help you:

  • Check the by-laws and confirm whether committee approval is needed for replacing carpet with a hard floor.
  • Meet the acoustic requirement. Many buildings set a minimum sound rating for impact noise. We specify an acoustic underlay and floor system to suit your building's requirement.
  • Supply documentation: product data sheets and underlay specifications for your application.
  • Plan access: lift bookings, loading-dock times, parking and noisy-work hours set by building management.

Our apartment and body corporate guide has a full checklist.

When to install during a build or renovation

The best time is usually after plastering and painting prep, and before doors, skirting and fix-out. Kitchens can then sit on the finished floor. In occupied homes we work room by room where possible. Removing old carpet first? We can do that too: carpet removal.

Licensing, insurance and warranty

  • QBCC licence 15100816. Check it on the QBCC licence register.
  • Queensland Home Warranty Scheme: eligible residential flooring and floor sanding work valued above the QBCC threshold must be covered by the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme. Ask us how it applies to your job.
  • 5-year workmanship warranty. Product warranties vary by manufacturer and range and are provided with the product.
  • Director-led: the team is led by director Benjamin Park, who brings 20+ years' experience.

What affects the cost of floor installation?

We don't publish prices online, because a number without a site visit is only a guess. Instead, we offer a free on-site measure and quote, shaped by:

FactorWhy it matters
Floor area and layoutMore rooms, hallways and angles mean more cutting and trimming
Product choiceSpecies, board width, thickness and finish vary widely, from hybrid and laminate to wide-board engineered and solid hardwood
Installation methodFloating is quicker; direct-stick and secret-nailed take longer and use adhesive or battens
Subfloor preparationMoisture barriers, grinding, levelling compound or a sheet underlay over old boards
Removal and disposalCarpet, underlay, gripper, tiles or old floating floors coming up first
Stairs and detailsStair treads and nosings, scotia or skirting, door trims and transitions to tiles
AccessApartment lift bookings, parking, body corporate working hours, upper floors
Site finishingSolid timber is sanded and coated on site after laying; pre-finished floors aren't

Your quote lists these as separate lines, so you can see where the cost sits.

Timber flooring installation FAQs

How long does timber floor installation take?
It depends on the floor area, the product and method, and any removal, levelling or slab drying. Floating and hybrid floors are generally quicker than direct-stick or nailed solid timber, and we confirm the timeframe in your quote.
Does timber need to acclimatise before installation?
Some products do and some don't. Solid timber usually needs time in the home to adjust to Brisbane's humidity, while many engineered and hybrid products are designed to go straight in. We follow each manufacturer's instructions.
Can you install timber floors on a new concrete slab?
Yes, once the slab is dry enough. New slabs release moisture for months, so we test before installing and use a moisture barrier or suitable adhesive system where needed.
Do I need body corporate approval for timber floors in my apartment?
Often, yes. Many Queensland bodies corporate require approval and a minimum acoustic rating for hard floors. We'll help you check the by-laws and provide the specifications your committee asks for.
Floating or glued: which is better?
Neither is always better. Floating is quicker and suits flat slabs and tiles; direct-stick gives a more solid, quieter feel. We recommend the method that suits your floor type, subfloor and budget.
How much does timber flooring installation cost?
We don't publish set prices, because cost depends on floor area and layout, the product you choose, the installation method, subfloor preparation, removal of old flooring, stairs and site access. We measure on site and give you a free, itemised written quote, including any carpet or old-floor removal.
Are you licensed?
Yes. Master Timber Floors holds QBCC licence 15100816, and the team is led by director Benjamin Park.
Do you install outside inner Brisbane?
Our focus is Brisbane's inner south and east (Woolloongabba, Kangaroo Point, East Brisbane, Coorparoo, Greenslopes, Camp Hill, Highgate Hill and Bulimba), and we work across greater Brisbane. See service areas.
