How long timber floor installation takes

Timber floor installation does not have one duration. A floating prefinished floor on a flat, dry slab is a shorter job than solid boards that are nailed, sanded and coated, or than a floor that is waiting on a slab to dry. Removal, levelling, stairs and apartment access add time. We confirm the timeframe in the quote after an on-site inspection. This page will not invent a typical number of days.

What moves the schedule

• Product and method. Hybrid and many floating floors are quicker to lay than direct-stick timber or secret-nailed solid. Site-finished floors then need coating time. Prefinished boards do not.
• Area and layout. More rooms, more doorways, and details such as a border or a staircase take longer than a single open rectangle.
• What has to come up first. Carpet, gripper, staples, tiles or an old floor are part of the programme when they are in the quote.
• The subfloor. Levelling and moisture control happen before boards go down. A new slab that is still too wet is a wait, not a floor we force in.
• Coating, if the floor is finished on site. Each coat needs to dry before the next. Humid Brisbane days slow drying. We do not publish a universal “ready in X hours” figure, because the coating system sets it.
• Access. Lift bookings, occupied houses and rooms that cannot be emptied all change how the days are split.

How to prepare

Before we measure

Know which rooms, what is on the floor now, and whether anyone is living in the house. If the building has a body corporate, find the by-laws for hard floors before the measure so acoustic requirements can be quoted rather than discovered later. Photos of the existing floor and any obvious humps or water stains help the first conversation. They do not replace the inspection.

Before install day

• Clear the rooms that are in the scope, including wardrobes down to the floor and anything fixed only by sitting on the boards.
• Leave the path from the truck or lift to the rooms open. Apartment loading rules are the building’s, and we plan around them.
• If the product needs to acclimatise, it needs to be in the house for the time the manufacturer specifies, in the conditions the floor will live in. Do not store packs in a closed garage or on a wet slab and assume that counts.
• On a new build, the usual window is after plaster and before doors, skirting and fix-out. Kitchens can then sit on the finished floor. Other trades still sanding walls or painting ceilings over a new floor will mark it.
• Pets need somewhere else to be while adhesive is open or while coating is wet.

After the boards are down

A prefinished or hybrid floor can usually be walked on once that room is finished and any adhesive, if it was glued, has had the time the product requires. A site-finished floor is different: socks only at first, furniture only when the coating has hardened, and rugs later than furniture. Exact times come with your coating, at handover.
